Background of the Study
Bilingualism is a prominent feature of Nigeria’s multilingual society, where individuals often navigate between indigenous languages and English. Computational methods have emerged as effective tools for evaluating bilingual language proficiency, leveraging automated scoring, language modeling, and machine learning algorithms (Adejumo, 2023). These methods provide objective, scalable assessments that can complement traditional testing approaches. In Nigeria, bilingual proficiency evaluation is particularly challenging due to code-switching, dialectal variations, and varying levels of language exposure across regions (Okoro, 2024). Recent studies have applied computational techniques to assess linguistic competence, but systematic evaluations specific to the Nigerian context are limited (Chinwe, 2025). This study aims to assess various computational methods used to evaluate bilingual proficiency in Nigeria, comparing their effectiveness, reliability, and cultural sensitivity. The research will integrate corpus analysis, performance metrics, and expert feedback to determine best practices for bilingual assessment in educational and professional settings.
Statement of the Problem
Although computational methods for evaluating bilingual language proficiency are emerging, their application in Nigeria is challenged by the unique linguistic landscape, including extensive code-switching and dialect diversity (Adejumo, 2023). Many existing models, developed for more homogeneous linguistic environments, do not fully capture the complexity of Nigerian bilingualism, leading to inconsistent assessments and potential biases (Okoro, 2024).
Objectives of the Study
Research Questions
Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it examines computational methods for evaluating bilingual proficiency in Nigeria, providing insights for more accurate and culturally sensitive language assessments. Its findings will benefit educators, policymakers, and language testing organizations by improving evaluation tools, which are crucial for academic and professional advancement in Nigeria’s diverse linguistic landscape.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study focuses on computational methods for bilingual proficiency evaluation in Nigeria and does not extend to monolingual assessments or regions outside Nigeria.
